On Tuesday June 10, 1958 I began my career as a life insurance agent with the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States. The day before, I graduated from Miami University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was created to recognize members who have contributed to the life and health insurance industry throughout their careers as well as contributing to their community. As insurance agents became the primary financial advisors to their clients, the scope of the award broadened. In 2004, the award was renamed the I. David Cohen Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of David Cohen who originally conceived the award and for his many years of service to NAIFA-Columbus. Duane A. Borcherding, CLU, ChFC, RICP was selected as the 2022 recipient and was recognized by NAIFA-Columbus Past President, Cort R. Bradbury (pictured with Duane below), during this year's luncheon on December 14, 2022. 

NAIFA-Columbus Members and guests met for a Membership Luncheon at Brio Polaris Grille. We were joined by John Fitzpatrick ALMI, ACS. John is the Regional Vice President for John Hancock in the Ohio and Upstate NY regions.

NAIFA-Ohio has selected Daniel Brookman as the 2021 Young Advisor Team (YAT) Leader of the Year recipient. The NAIFA-Ohio YAT Leader of the year award recognizes an advisor’s commitment to NAIFA including service on local and state and committees as well as involvement with state and/or federal legislative efforts; participation in external service work such as charities; and an ability to inspire others.

Scott Blake, MBA, knows the value of political advocacy. After a career in the political sphere, he now works to protect the interests of Main Street Americans as well as insurance and financial professionals.

From Politics to Financial Services

Blake transitioned from politics to financial services at the suggestion of his own financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual. Now, he's also a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. Working primarily with upwardly mobile millennials, Blake says he likes helping driven, motivated people achieve their dreams and goals. He talks about one such instance when he helped a millennial client buy their first home. “It's about serving your client. I get to wish for the best for them and help them achieve their dreams.” That's his favorite part of being a financial advisor—he gets to be everyone’s cheerleader.
